Winter time is the prime time to suffer from outdoor injuries caused by ice and snow. Even
walking a short distance can prove to be hazardous if you aren’t careful.
While you can’t avoid injuries altogether there are steps you can take to be safer while walking outside:
Wear Winter Friendly Footwear. Some shoes are better suited for slippery surfaces. Make sure when you’re walking outdoors during snowy or icy weather that you’re wearing shoes with good traction such as winter boots, flats or all purpose weather shoes that provide some traction/grip on the bottom. Remember, all boots are not created equally, so if they have a smooth surface they are likely not conducive to walking on snow or ice.
Tread Cautiously. When walking, we typically walk heel to toe, but on slippery pavement, attempt to set your foot down evenly, heel and toe at the same time. Walking carefully and slowly is your best bet, instead of walking at your normal clip, when outdoors.
Get A Grip. Whether walking down stairs, on pavement, in grass or dirt try to find something secure to hold onto while walking. A banister, fence or even a car may give you that extra stability to make it indoors safely.
If you do fall and start experiencing back pain, try applying ice to reduce the inflammation. Your back pain may last a few days to a few weeks but gently easing back into your regular activities is best. Pushing through pain isn’t always best, especially in the case of an accident.
If you’re feeling unsure about your injury and treatment, then a visit with your chiropractor is advised. Getting a thorough evaluation can help you determine the extent of your injuries and necessary treatment to get you back on your feet safely again.
